Grape Hyacinth~ bringing spring indoors

MountainPrairieFlowerFarm

About this time of winter, I become color starved. The snowy February landscape blends into the gray skies and the days run together. So I invite spring into the house a few months early by forcing bulbs~ in particular grape hyacinths.

Grape Hyacinth is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in well-drained soil and full to partial sunlight. It is a hardy flower that can tolerate various climate conditions, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced gardeners AND perfect for forcing in the house during the bleak winter months. The flower is really clusters of small, bell-shaped flowers which closely resembles tiny bunches of grapes, hence the name. It creates a charming visual appeal when planted en masse or alongside other spring-blooming flowers.

And...

Grape hyacinths are edible! The flowers, leaves and bulbs can be eaten but they don't taste like grapes. They have a bitter flavor and might give you a stomach ache if you eat a lot of them.

Here are the steps to growing grape hyacinths in the house:

  • Dig up existing bulbs or purchase bulbs in late summer or early fall. Grape hyacinth bulbs require a cold period of 35 to 48 degrees F. (2-9 C.) for at least ten weeks. I usually purchase bulbs then leave them in my garage until mid to late winter.

  • In February or so, I pull the bulbs into the house and nestle them in a shallow container that has barely damp soil in the bottom. There's no need to submerse the bulbs into the soil, just snug them, flat side down, into the damp dirt.

  • Once the bulbs show roots, I replant them into different planters and cute pots

  • Choose a bright, slightly cool (not cold) area of your home in order to stimulate flowering. Continue to keep the soil moist. Once grape hyacinth blooms appear, you can prolong their flowering by keeping them located in cooler areas your house.

    OR

  • You can plant several pots at various intervals of growth to enjoy longer flowering displays.

  • Forcing grape hyacinth and growing grape hyacinth indoors is an easy and fun way to enjoy their beautiful, fragrant, grape-like blooms early in the season.
